Its relationship with neighboring Haiti is strained because of the mass migration of Haitians to the Republic, leading to an increase in crime and other social problems. The territory is a full member of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie. The island has a Free Trade Agreement with the US Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua through the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement.
