Located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, on the east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, it is the largest island in the world and one of three constituent territories which constitute the Kingdom of Denmark, along with Denmark and the Faroe Islands. Citizens from all three countries are all citizens of Denmark and the EU. The capital city is Nuuk. With a population of around 56,081 people, it is one of the least populated regions in the world. The island has one of the highest sources of renewable energy in the world, mostly from hydropower. It is a self-governing entity under the monarchy of the Kingdom of Denmark, whose head of state is Queen Margrethe II. The monarch officially has executive power and chairs the Council of State.

if you are interested in knowing about the diplomatic relations of this country, this article provides information on the foreign diplomatic relations of Greenland and other bilateral relations.

About the country of Greenland

The economy is largely reliant on fishing, accounting for over 90 percent of the country’s exports. The shrimp and fish sector is its largest source of income. Richly abundant in minerals, mining of ruby deposits started on the island in 2007. Other minerals include iron, uranium, copper, nickel, titanium, etc. The state oil company, Nunaoil was set up to help grow the hydrocarbon industry in the country. Also, the state company Nunamineral was launched on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange to generate more capital to enhance the increase in the production of gold. Electricity is still generated traditionally from oil or diesel power plants, despite the large surplus of potential hydropower. Currently, it is a program to build more hydropower plants. The first and largest is the Buksefjord hydroelectric power plant.

Body in charge of foreign relations and affairs

The ministry of foreign affairs takes charge of maintaining foreign relations in the state’s interests. The objectives of the ministry include but are not limited to making sure that all procedures are abided by and fostering bilateral relations with other territories through foreign partnerships.

Countries with diplomatic relations

The island has strong ties with the UK, US, and other states in the continent including some diplomatic missions in major European cities.  In 1985, unlike Denmark, it left the European Economic Community. Later when the  EEC became the European Union, the country kept some ties through its associated relationship with the organization. However, it is good to note that EU laws do not apply to the country except in terms of trade. This nation is designated as a member of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) and is therefore officially not a member of the European Union. Although it can and does receive support from the European Development Fund, Multiannual Financial Framework, European Investment Bank, and EU Programmes here.

Bilateral relations of the country

There are tons of business opportunities within the territory for foreign investments, especially those in the agriculture, tourism, and logistics sectors. The City office is pursuing investments from other continents to the state while promoting its export trade to the US. With a gradual increase in the bilateral relations between the US and the country after establishing diplomatic relations, there is an opening for better cooperation and trade between them. The government also has plans to create a large aluminum smelter, using hydropower to develop an exportable product. It is expected that there will be a high demand for imported labor when that happens. The EU has urged the government to restrict China’s development of rare-earth mineral projects since it accounts for 95 percent of global supply.
