The Republic of Mozambique, which is situated on Africa’s southeast coast, exported commodities worth US$5.1 billion in 2021.

This sum of money has grown by 9.1% since 2017 and accelerated by 47.7% from 2020 to 2021.

According to the estimated exchange rate for 2021, the Mozambican pula has lost 3% value since 2017 but gained 5.8% from 2020 to 2021. Since 2020, Mozambique’s exports priced in weaker US dollars have been much more expensive for foreign consumers.

Coal, including coal-based fuels, electrical energy, titanium ores, and concentrates, coke or semi-coke, aluminum bars, and rods, dried shelled vegetables, petroleum gases, unprocessed tobacco and tobacco trash, aluminum wire, and coal are Mozambique’s ten most important exports. Over three-quarters (76.5%) of Mozambique’s total export sales in 2021 will come from these key goods.

With a population of 32.2 million, Mozambique’s total 2021 exports of $5.1 billion will provide about $160 for each citizen of the country in southeast Africa. In 2020, that figure will be equivalent to an average of $100.

  • Oil and other mineral fuels: $2.2 billion in the US (43.1% of total exports)
  • Aluminum: $1.1 billion (22.1%)
  • Ores, slag, ash: $433.4 million (8.5%)
  • Vegetables: $155.1 million (3%)
  • Tobacco manufactured substitutes: $144.8 million (2.8%)
  • Fruits, nuts: $118.6 million (2.3%)
  • Oil seeds: $116.2 million (2.3%)
  • Gems, precious metals: $108.3 million (2.1%)
  • Sugar, sugar confectionery: $90.9 million (1.8%)
  • $89.6 million for salt, sulfur, stone, and cement (1.8%)

Given that they account for 89.7% of the total value of Mozambique’s international shipments, its top 10 exports are concentrated. Among the top 10 export categories, gems and precious metals experienced the highest growth, increasing by 848.7% between 2020 and 2021.

Vegetables came in second for increasing export sales with an increase of 162.2%.

Shipments of sugar from Mozambique, including sugar confections, experienced the third-fastest increase in value, rising by 105%.

Due to a -10.8% decrease year over year, tobacco and its manufactured substitutes were the top declining export category among Mozambique’s top 10.
