A country located in Central America and bordered to the north by Honduras and Guatemala, and to the south by the Pacific Ocean. Its capital city is San Salvador. The country has a population of around 6.8 million people. It ranks 124th among 189 countries on the Human Development Index despite the high rate of poverty and violence caused by gangs. Since 2019, its economic improvements have led to the country having the lowest level of income inequality among other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean region. According to a study, it has one of the easiest economies for doing business. As a Central American and Caribbean nation with strong relations with other Caribbean countries, the republic is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), and the Central American Integration System (SICA).

About the country of El Salvador 

It is a member of the UN and a part of its specialized agencies. It is also part of the Organisation of American States, the Central American Parliament, and the Central American Integration System amongst others. It participates in the Central American Security Commission, an organization whose aim is to promote regional arms control. The country is a member of the World Trade Organisation and pursues regional free trade agreements. It actively participates in the Summit of the Americas process and heads a group on market access under the Free Trade Area of the Americas initiative.

Body in charge of foreign relations and affairs 

The ministry responsible for maintaining foreign relations in the interests of the territory is the ministry of foreign affairs. The duties of the ministry include ensuring all procedures are abided by and improving bilateral relations with other countries through foreign partnerships.

Countries with diplomatic relations 

The Republic has close relationships with the UK, US, and other states of the Inter-American system including some diplomatic missions in many Western Hemisphere countries and major European cities.  It was the only country to support the empowered 14th Dalai Lama in 1950 by helping his Tibetan Government cabinet minister’s telegram to request an appeal before the General Assembly of the UN to stop the annexation of Tibet by the People’s Republic of China. The country has diplomatic relations with several countries in the world including those in the Caribbean region.

Bilateral relations of the country 

The island has strong relations with the United States, one of the reasons the continent is home to a large number of Salvadorians looking for better opportunities. Growing a highly advanced economy and democratic country is valuable to US interests in the Caribbean region. In 2006, it became the first nation to ratify the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) which was negotiated by the five countries of Central America and the Dominican Republic as well as the United States. CAFTA demands that the government of Salvador adopt policies that foster free trade amongst its members. There are a lot of business and investment opportunities in this country for foreign businesses, especially those in the agriculture, tourism, and logistics sectors. The Mexico City office has sought to pull in investors from the continent to the country while promoting exports to America by domestic companies. With the increase in bilateral relations between the UK and the island after establishing diplomatic relations, there is an enhancement and better cooperation and trade between them.
